Maryland shoppers are getting one week to make the checkout line sting a little less. Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, shoppers across Maryland can skip the state's 6 percent sales tax on qualifying back-to-school clothing, shoes and backpacks during Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week, which runs through 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15. More than 1 million rechargeable hand warmers are being recalled after hundreds of people suffered burns and one person died. OCOOPA Direct recalled about 1.5 million of its hand warmers, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday, July 30. The lithium-ion batteries can overheat and ignite, creating a risk of serious injury or death from fires and burns. The CPSC said it's aware of 1,480 reports of the hand warmers overheating.
